Did you know that a 5 dollar gold coin has more monetary today than it was back in its days of circulation? If you are a coin collector then you would know this for a fact.
Gold coins fetch a good value today because of the amount of gold contained in the coin. A Liberty five dollar gold coin, for instance, has a quarter of an ounce of gold at most. Gold is a highly priced metal so that any coin with a fair amount of gold in it will have a pretty good value.
Aside from the amount of gold the coin contains, the date and the mintmark are also very important factors that affect the increase or decrease in the value of a 5 dollar gold coin. There are at least six five dollar gold coins that are commonly sought out by collectors as well as by people who plan on investing on gold stocks.
Indian Head 5 Dollar Gold Coin
The Indian Head $5 Half Eagle Gold Coin was minted and circulated from 1908 to 1929. This is a fairly priced gold coin and you can easily find a gold coin to complete your collection. All except for coins dated 1929 because these are fairly scarce since many of them have been melted. Also beware of pieces dated 1915-D since these have been proven to be
counterfeit.
It is also one of the only US coins to be incused, the other being the Indian Head Quarter Eagle. An incuse design is a coin where the design is stamped into the metal of the coin instead of being raised above the surface like other coins.
Liberty Head 5 Dollar Gold Coin
The Liberty Head five dollar gold coin has two varieties: one with a motto above the eagle and the other without a motto. The Liberty Head 5 dollar gold coin without the motto above the eagle was the first version; it was minted from 1939-1866. The second version with the addition of the motto was minted from 1866 to 1908.
Some of the rarest coins are those which belong to the 268 pieces of the 1854-S mint of the Liberty Head gold coin without the motto.
The Liberty Head Half Eagle is also known as the Coronet Head five dollar gold coin. It is one of the longest running among the US coins, minted from 1839 to 1908 with only two modifications. The coin size was increased to 21.6 mm in 1840 and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” was added to the reverse, above the eagle.
Classic Head 5 Dollar Gold Coin
The gold coins of this design are also one of the most affordable and a collector will find it a less challenging endeavor of completing the complete set of Classic Head 5 Dollar Half Eagle Gold Coins. Perhaps, the trickiest challenges you can come across are finding coins from the Charlotte and Dahlonega mints, yet they are still quite affordable despite the fact that they are gold coins.
The minting of the coins of this design only lasted four years, from 1834 to 1838. The design is almost the same as the Classic Head Quarter Eagle five dollar coin showing Liberty with a ribbon in her curly hair.
Capped Bust 5 Dollar Gold Coin
The Capped Bust Half Eagle contains some of the rarest and most sought after gold coin types. The coins dated 1815 are very rare with only 10 to 20 pieces known today. Other extremely hard to find coins are: those dated 1822 with only three examples, the 1825/4 overdates with only two known examples, the 1828/7 overdates which are also extremely rare, and those dated 1832 with the Curved Base 2, also very uncommon.
There are three major types of the Capped Bust 5 Dollar Coin: the Capped Bust left (1807 to 1812), the Capped Head left large size (1813 to 1829), and the Capped Head left small size (1829 to 1834).
Turban Head 5 Dollar Gold Coin
One of the earliest coins produced by the United States Mint, it was made from 1795 to 1807, with two major varieties along with some rare types. The two major varieties are Capped Bust right small eagle minted from 1795 to 1798 and the Capped Bust right heraldic eagle which was issued from 1795 to 1807. The last mint for the first variety is one of the rarest five dollar US coins. There are only seven coins known to exist today.
Collecting five dollar gold coins along with other gold coins can be more than just a hobby of coin collection; it can also be a very sound investment in gold stocks since these coins are known to have a fairly good percentage of gold in them.
